YWCA Northeast Kansas Meets 2015 Fundraising Goal, Thanks Supporters

January 7, 2016 – TOPEKA, KS – Thanks to corporate and community support, the YWCA Northeast Kansas has surpassed its fundraising goal for 2015, agency leaders announced today.

The more than $260,000 fundraising balance was crucial to meeting operating expenses that help the YWCA administer critical programs that help eliminate racism and empower women in our community.

YWCA Northeast Kansas officials appealed to the community for help earlier this year. Since then, scores of volunteers went to work, contacting supporters and community members who pledged their support.   More than $95,000 in donations came from nearly 250 individuals and organizations from Topeka and surrounding areas.

Corporate support was also strong. Security Benefit stepped up with a leading gift of $50,000. Other businesses and banks contributed more than $32,000. And the Capitol Federal® Foundation responded with a challenge – if the YWCA could raise $200,000 then the Foundation would donate an additional $50,000. The YWCA met that challenge.

“It had been several years since YWCA held a campaign of this significance. We cannot thank our volunteers and donors enough for helping us realize this goal,” Board President Karla Clem said. “The support from Security Benefit and the Capitol Federal® Challenge Grant came at a crucial time. The tremendous support we’ve received proves the YWCA is needed and valued in this community. It is a testament to the good work the YWCA does and how supported our mission continues to be.”

Many church groups contributed cash as well as items for clients being served in the YWCA’s Center for Safety and Empowerment. The balance of the fundraising goal came from increased participation in two of our major fundraising and awareness events, Women’s Night Out and the Run4aReason race, supporting our Girls on the Run program.

“This operating capital campaign was our first step in getting the YWCA Northeast Kansas back on stable footing,” Clem said. “The future of the YWCA looks a lot brighter and 2016 should be a much stronger year, but we must continue to work. We have great leadership from our staff and board, and this community support allows us to spend our time providing services to those in need, addressing our core mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.”
